  • Keep Vid: Downloads web videos from hosting sites like YouTube. There are a lot of similar tools.
  • 1-Click YouTube Downloader: Nice Firefox add-on inserts download buttons directly onto the YouTube video page.
  • MPEG Streamclip: Great, free tool. We use it to convert downloaded mp4′s into edit-friendly formats like dv or photo jpeg. Also handy for taking ripped DVD .vob files and exporting edit-friendly formats. Great for trimming downloaded mpeg files from the Internet Archive as well.
  • Mac the Ripper: DVD ripper for Mac.
  • BitTorrent: Find tv shows, movies, and other crap people upload in varying degrees of quality.
  • Perian: Plugin that allows you to watch and convert .flv and other file types in Quicktime.
  • Analog to Digital Converter (ADVC): Transfer thrift store VHS to digital. You can also use a dv camera that allows video pass-through for the same purpose.
  • iShowU: Affordable screen capture software for Macs. Some remixers exclusively use screen capture software instead of dealing with all of the above programs and conversions.
