- Keep Vid: Downloads web videos from hosting sites like YouTube. There are a lot of similar tools.
- Easy YouTube Downloader: Nice Firefox add-on inserts download buttons directly onto the YouTube video page.
- MPEG Streamclip: Great, free tool. We use it to convert downloaded mp4′s into edit-friendly formats like dv or photo jpeg. Also handy for taking ripped DVD .vob files and exporting edit-friendly formats. Great for trimming downloaded mpeg files from the Internet Archive as well.
- Mac the Ripper: DVD ripper for Mac.
- Handbrake: Transcoder for PC, Mac and Linux.
- BitTorrent: Find tv shows, movies, and other crap people upload in varying degrees of quality.
- Perian: Plugin that allows you to watch and convert .flv and other file types in Quicktime.
- Analog to Digital Converter (ADVC): Transfer thrift store VHS to digital. You can also use a dv camera that allows video pass-through for the same purpose.
- TiVo & iTiVo: If you are serious about remix and want your footage straight from the source, there’s TiVo. iTiVo can help download your shows to a Mac for converting to editable formats.
- If all else fails screen capture it. (Screenflow, iShowU, etc)
